Our Story
Nestled in the heart of Greenwich, just a stone’s throw from the Royal Park, the Greenwich Tavern is a warm and welcoming pub with a rich history and a vibrant atmosphere. A favorite among locals and visitors alike, our charming venue offers a perfect blend of traditional British hospitality with a modern twist.

Historic Roots
The pub stands on a site with deep historical significance. In the 16th century, a prison for Protestant prisoners under Queen Mary I once occupied the area. Later, it was linked to a debtors' prison near the Greenwich royal palace.

Once the Gloucester Hotel
Before becoming The Greenwich Tavern, the building was known as The Gloucester Hotel and later The Gloucester Arms. It has served locals and travelers for well over a century.

Historic Fire in 1851
A newspaper report from 1851 mentions a fire at The Gloucester Hotel, providing one of the earliest recorded references to the establishment.

Dogs are Welcome
The Greenwich Tavern is a dog-friendly pub, making it a popular choice for locals and park-goers. It also has a spacious outdoor seating area, ideal for a pint in the sun after a walk-through Greenwich Park.

Prime Location
Situated right next to Greenwich Park, one of London’s most famous green spaces, the pub is a popular stop for both tourists and locals looking for a drink after a day of exploring.

Rainbow Plaque Recognition
In 2023, The Greenwich Tavern became the third location in London to receive a Rainbow Plaque, celebrating its importance as a former LGBTQ+ venue and its role in the film Beautiful Thing.
